Opening a Bank Account for Someone Else

Question

I opened a bank account for my sister because the bank gives money to anyone who opens an account. On her own she wouldn’t have done anything, and I did it in order to earn money for myself. She agreed to it, since she still has her regular bank account and opening a new one doesn’t make a difference to her.

Does the money belong to me or to my sister? Thank you very much.

Answer

If I understood the story correctly, she agreed that you should open the account for her and that you would receive the present. If so, the extra money belongs to you.

But if she only agreed that you open the account, and she did not agree that the present should be yours, then the extra money belongs to her.
