Orphans and Widows

Question

Hi i know that there is a special inyan of giving tzedaka to almanos and yesomim is that true also for paying for presents for them that aren't necessities?

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

Yes, you can since we are to go out of our way to make widows and orphans happy beyond bare necessities.

In the words of the Rambam (Hil. Deot 6:10):

We must speak to them gently and treat them with honor. We may not cause them pain with work or hurt their feelings with sharp words. We must show more concern for their finances than for our own. Any person who angers them, hurts their feelings, oppresses them, or causes them a financial loss violates this prohibition.

In another place the Rambam writes (Sefer HaMitzvos, Negative Commandment 256):

"He has warned us against oppressing the orphan and the widow, as He said, ‘You shall not afflict any widow or orphan.’ This prohibition includes not distressing them either through speech or action. Instead, one must speak to them with soft and kind words, engage with them in good dealings, and ensure that they live well and joyfully. Whoever falls short in any of these aspects has violated this commandment."

So yes, any kindness you can show widows and orphans is a mitzva.
