Tzedaka Question
Question
Rav my question is this
I have limited funds
I have the ability to pay off a doctors degree over six years
But the cost is I won’t have a spare cent for six years
I’m 53 by the time I become a doctor I’ll be retiring
If I don’t do it I will have funds spare for helping others
The question is is it better to help as many people as I can or just try to better myself
There are a few things involved
I said I would lay down my life to help others
I said I would become a doctor
I said I would seek ( ch a b a d )
Can you give me some tanakh based guidance rav
Answer
Shalom!
Thank you for your question.
If I understand your question correctly: You are permitted and encouraged to study/pay off your education if this is needed for your "parnassa" - to allow you to support yourself and make a respectable income.
If there is no extra money for charitable purposes during this time then so be it. You can then give charity when you start making money.
