Maaser money for kiddush in shul

Question

Can I use money from maaser to give to a shul for a shabbat kiddush for seudat hodayah of a child's birth?

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

You may use ma'aser money for a seudat hodaya or kiddush, as long as you are not obligated to make it—for example, in cases where sometimes people in the shul make kiddushim and sometimes they don’t.

Also, one should have the intent to use ma'aser money before purchasing items for the kiddush. Otherwise, one cannot use it retroactively (unless it’s something one generally uses ma'aser money for).

There should also be talmidei chachamim who will take part in the kiddush, so that it would consider as using the ma'aser money to feed them.
