Maser

Question

If you take a loan for a business venture You are also in debts You do not have a job You are married with 6 children Do you have to pay maaser on the money loan?

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

First of all, one who is in debt because he cannot cover his basic day to day expenses is not obligated to give Ma’aser at all. So too, if your daily living expenses are more than your income then you are also exempt from giving Ma'aser.

Second, one does not have to give ma'aser on the money of the loan itself, because it is not considered a profit. One does, however, have to give ma'aser on the money that one makes to pay back the loan, because that is coming from profits.

Once again, one who doesn't have enough money for his daily expenses may not have to give ma'aser at all.
