Ma'aser Question

Hi I’m a computer programmer since the dot com bust I have had instability with jobs in 2012 I got a job with the IRS My whole life I gave 10 % of my net and sometimes more I got laid off I would go home to live with my mother she passed away in 2010 in 2012 I got a job with the IRS and slept better at nights Now with what’s going on I look at what would get if I retire and in no way can I make ends meets the maser cuts into the BARE minimum I’ll give and example when I first started working at the IRS I would treat myself to steak once a week Friday now eating just chicken or any food won’t make it sold my condo for $125,000 loss and just living in a room this is an example of what I mean by minimum I would give what I can but maser ?

One who is in debt because he cannot cover his expenses is not obligated to give Ma’aser. So too, if your expenses are more than your income then you are also exempt from giving Ma'aser.
