Ma'aser Money

Question

Greetings I have a question about masser money. We are in debt alot of money. With no way to pay it back as our financial situation has changed. I am still taking off masser from my paycheck. I'm wondering if paying back the debt should come before taking off masser money. Please advise.

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

One who is in debt is not obligated to give Ma’aser, since o ne who is in a constant situation of the cost of spending even for the most minimal things that one needs, is more than one makes, and only living at the most minimal standards. One is completely exempt from having to give Ma’aser, and doesn't even need to make a note to pay back later.
