Messenger Who Made a Mistake in Giving a Gift

A person sent a sum of money as a gift to two people, and the messenger gave the entire amount to one of them and did not tell him to give half to the other. The recipient spent the entire amount on an item he would not have bought for himself if he had not received the gift. Later, the recipient learned that only half of the amount was intended for him. Who should give the amount to the second recipient: the messenger who caused the damage or the first recipient?
