Dirt Caused by a Garbage Bag

Hello. We live in a settlement, and one day when we were leaving, we placed a garbage bag on the car to throw it in the bin but forgot about it. On the way, we had no choice and left it outside the settlement on the roadside near someone's vineyard. Since the area attracts wildlife, they tore the bag, and the area got dirty. The owner cleaned it up and asked for payment. Do we need to pay for this, as it was not on his property but on the road near his land?
