Rent Question

Question

My daughter has moved into an apartment with girls who already live there on the condition that if she moves out she finds someone else. She moved out because she left the country and has found 4 different girls who they have rejected. One was not religious so she was not a good fit. One was 18 and they said she was too young. One was a bit strange and the last one she found who seemed like a good fit, her roommate said she did research and has been told she is difficult to live with even though she visited the apartment and the other girls thought she seemed nice. What is my daughter’s obligations in sharing the rent. As background she moved into the apartment in July for 3 months and then left the country for 3 months but continued to pay rent even though she wasn’t there and then came back for another 2 and half months and paid rent and has left again before Pesachya and is still paying rent and is trying very hard to find a replacement. She has left the country due to visa issues and the girls knew this upfront. The last girl she found is still a possibility but her roommate doesn’t want her. What obligations does my daughter have? Paying the rent is very difficult for her and is causing her distress. Thanks for helping

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

The rule is according to the Shulchan Aruch that if your doughter finds a replacement who is similar to your daughter, as in age, frumkait etc., then she is not obligated to continue paying the rent since she has fulfilled her obligation.
