Yichud in a Taxi

Question

Can 2 girls go in a taxi very early morning for a shirt ride

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

It is permitted for a woman to be alone in a car with a male driver since in a car there are windows allowing people to see in and out (this is even if the side windows are tinted since one can see in through the main window) of the car and this is even at night and generally there are always other drivers on the road so it would not be considered as yichud. As such, it would forbidden, for example, for a woman to take a male operated taxi to a quiet country spot where there are no passersby.

It is worth noting that according to the Ashkenazi custom a woman is permitted to be with 2 men during the day and  3 men during the night (men who are considered as Kosher), according to the Sephardi custom it is always forbidden no matter how many men are present.

One man (who is not considered as "asokov im noshim") and only in a case of need, may be misyached with 3 women in the day, and 4 at night according to the Ashkenazi custom. whereas according to the Sephardi custom, it is forbidden to be misyached no matter how many women are present.

For consideration of tzniut we recommend that a woman sit in the back seat when being taxied by a male driver and it is best not to engage in needless conversation with the driver, either.

It is also worth mentioning the halacha of “parutz” which refers to a person who is known for loose standards of modesty and propriety, it would only be permitted if the door of the house is left open.

Therefore, to answer your question, yes, it is permitted for 2 girls to go for an early morning ride in a taxi with a male driver.
