Hysterosalpingography test
Question
I have been trying to become pregnant for about a year now; we have one older child.
The doctor prescribed a hysterosalpingography imaging test,
and it needs to be done between days 7–14.
My question is whether this test causes ritual impurity (makes me a niddah).
Thank you very much.
Answer
Shalom and blessings!
The hysterosalpingography test itself does not render you impure, but if a lot of blood is seen after the test, that does cause impurity.
The guidance is that after the test one should minimize the taharah checks and do only those checks that are absolutely necessary.
- If you begin the process after the test, you do only the hefsek taharah, one check on the first day and one check on the seventh day.
- If the test is done in the middle of the seven clean days, you do only one check on the seventh day.
In addition, during the seven clean days it is recommended to place a white pad over the white underwear so that if there is a questionable stain it will be easier to permit it (since it is possible that the medical examination caused friction and a minor injury; and sometimes polydine is used to disinfect the cervix, and the polydine can look like blood). When the medical examination is done on days of purity, dark clothing should be worn.

With blessings that you merit viable offspring easily and joyfully, and that everything should go smoothly.
