The Relevance of a Pre-Birth Fixed Cycle After Childbirth

Question

Before giving birth, my wife had a fixed monthly cycle, on the 29th of Tevet 5784. She is still nursing. Since giving birth, she has only seen blood twice:14th of Kislev 578522nd of Iyar (recently)My question is, since she has not seen her period on the date of her previous fixed cycle since giving birth, does that fixed cycle still have any halachic relevance? For example; should we be concerned about the Onah Beinonit (the average interval), day 31 from the last period, which would fall today, the 23rd of Iyar? This week I was told on the halacha hotline that there is no need to worry about it.... But one rabbi I asked said it’s best to be stringent. Another rabbi said that’s a mistake, since she has not seen even once on her previous fixed cycle date post-birth, the old fixed cycle is no longer relevant. He also said that if a cycle was established during nursing, it’s not considered a normal fixed cycle. So now I’m confused. Has any qualified halachic authority issued a clear ruling on this?

Answer

Shalom,

The following is the Pesak from Hagaon Harav Amrom Fried, shlit”a:

A. One must take into account a fixed cycle if she resumes menstruating. For example, if her fixed cycle was every 34 days, she must observe Onah precautions on day 34 after the beginning of the previous menstruation

B. Since she has not returned to seeing on her previous fixed cycle, she should be stringent and also be concerned for the Onah Beinonit (average interval).

C. If you called to receive Rabbi Fried’s opinion and were given a different ruling, that is not considered a ruling directly from the Rav, since what is written here is his Pesak. It’s likely the person on the line misunderstood your question.

D. This case is not related to the rule that a woman does not establish a cycle during pregnancy or nursing, because here the concern is based on a cycle that had already been established before the pregnancy and nursing.
