Little mountain
Question
Rabbi? My last name is Kleinberg. I don’t everything it means but I know this. They ask if I’m Jewish and I’m expected to laugh and say no… but if I’m not then why does it hurt to say no? Why does traditional Jewish media make me smile? Why do i believe in Jesus journey but not his monomyth? Why does my name seem like a meta-reference to Zion by a people who emigrated to Prussia from nomadic roots?
Answer
Shalom!
Thank you for your question.
It is true that “Kleinberg” does sound like a Jewish family name, and indeed, there are many Jewish “Kleinbergs,” nevertheless, as you note, a Jewish-sounding last name does not mean you are Jewish.
