Get a get from a goy

Question

I married a non-Jewish Israeli man in the EU. The man's father was Jewish. The man now wants to divorce me. Can he give me a get?

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

A person is only Jewish if his/her mother is Jewish. The father’s status is irrelevant in this regard.

Hence, you were married to a non-Jewish man, and no Get is required; however, you should also check if his mother may be Jewish, and if so you would need a Get.

It sounds as if you are Jewish. Allow me to encourage you to re-connect with your roots. Reach out to your local Orthodox rabbi, become a member of the community, and begin to study your Jewish heritage.

May your next husband be a nice Jewish man and may you build a Jewish home together.
