Kosher Laws

Question

I work in a group home for disabled adults. There are 4 individuals in the home. 2 of the families have requested their children follow a kosher diet yet these individuals don't have the capacity to understand why food is restricted. I'm not of this faith but I would like to understand the best way to proceed.

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

I understand that this might indeed be an awkward situation for you!

Nevertheless, you should continue to give them Kosher food and you can explain to these individuals, as best you can, that they are Jewish, and because they are Jewish they must keep kosher. Tell them that the kosher laws come from the Torah which is the holy book that tells us how G-d wants the Jewish people to live.

These individuals should be told that they are lucky that they have these “restrictions” as it defines them as G-d’s chosen people!
