Kashrut: Gelatin Pills

Question

I live in an area with limited access to kosher food options, and I’ve heard that it is permissible to take omega-3 supplements that contain gelatin. Could you please clarify whether this is allowed?

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

Gelatin is fascinating issue in the world as kashrut. It is found in medicine as well as other foods and candies.

Gelatine is made from the bones, cartilage, or skin of animals or fish. It is used as a stabilizer, thickener, or as a texturiser.

While normative halacha rules that gelatin is not kosher even though it has been dried out, pulverized, and completely transformed, nevertheless, if the gelatin-based tablet is tasteless, when in medicine form, it is permitted to take the medicine.
