Dairy Hand Mixer For Pareve

Question

Hi. I use a hand mixer for my cheesecakes. I want to bake pareve cookies now that requires a hand mixer. My question is, if I use the hand mixer that has been used for dairy to mix these cookies, does it make the cookies dairy or pareve?

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

You may use your hand mixer with your pareve cooking. Your cookies will remain pareve.

The reason for this is because your hand mixer is a) clean and b) I assume only used with cold dairy products (cheese). Even if it is used for hot dairy products there would still be no problem if a) the mixer is clean b) the current batter is cold.

There are even more leniencies when the hand mixer was not used in 24 hrs. which is likely your case, as well. When a utensil or appliance was not used within the last 24 hrs., it is known as “eino ben yomo,” meaning, “not used today” or “older than a day.” When a utensil has not been used in 24hrs it cannot pass on any significant taste (whether kosher/non-kosher/meat/dairy) that it absorbed in a previous use to the foods it is currently being used with.

So in your case, even though the mixer was used for hot cheese, any taste in the mixer will not affect the pareve food.

Any taste that an eino ben yomo appliance could pass on to the food it is currently being used with is known as “ta’am lifgam,” meaning, “a bad taste,” which, as mentioned, does not affect the food.
