Prohibition of Growing Vegetables
Question
What is the prohibition of growing vegetables, and is the entire crop forbidden, or is part of what has grown permitted, and if so, what is it?
Answer
Vegetables that began growing during the Sabbatical year are forbidden to eat due to the prohibition of growing. If they started growing before the Sabbatical year and were harvested during the Sabbatical year, they have the sanctity of the seventh year but are not subject to the prohibition of growing [according to the Ramban and the Rash]. However, there are those who hold [according to the Rambam] that any vegetable harvested in the seventh year, even if it began growing before, is subject to the prohibition of growing.
