The Halchaos of Revai

Question

Hi I planted 6 grape trees in my house on 7/21/2025 which was תמוז 25. 1. I bought these trees as 1 year old bare root only tree’s, without soil, the counting of three years starts from when they were planted into the ground in my house. Is this correct? 2. Since it was planted before ט״ו׳ בשבט do we say it is already 1 year old plant HALACHIKLY? 3. I believe the 3rd year I can use the grapes if I redeem the grapes with a coin. What date will that be? 4.Can I use $0.25 coin for all trees or must it be the true value of grape or one coin per tree? 5. The date that you mentioned in question 3, if there were grapes on the tree before that date, now that the date has passed is it מותר to use or it must be new grape blossomed after this date (do we go after harvesting or picking the fruit)? I would appreciate telling me of other הלכות I need to keep an eye out. ( I know about כלאים, with vegetables). Thanks in advance !!

Answer

Thank you for your question.

Since you planted it in Tammuz, the first year is from Rosh Hashanah, the next Rosh Hashanah is the second year, and the third Rosh Hashanah is the third year. However, we wait until Tu BiShvat to end the third year, and only fruits that grew from that Tu BiShvat onward are considered Revai. When you later harvest them, you must first be mechallel all the grapes onto a perutah (you would need to check at the time the value of a perutah). All the grapes from before that Tu BiShvat are assur to eat.
