Injecting Medicine - Kashrut
Question
Hello Rabbi;
I hope you are well. My name is Ella, I am a Clinical Social Worker in New York. I work with a male haredi client on a multidisciplinary team that includes a nurse practitioner. My client, we will call him Aaron, has a diagnosis of Bipolar II with psychotic features and is psychiatrically hospitalized regularly (a few times/year). Currently Aaron is prescribed an oral pill medication, but he often forgets to take his pills. The NP would like to prescribe him an Intra-muscular anti-psychotic medication which would remain in his system for a month-long duration. Before speaking with Aaron about this, what considerations do we need to take to make sure this is Kosher? Is this medication allowed? Aaron is most concerned with making sure his neshamah is healthy and good, and this could be a part of this process.
Many thanks,
Ella
