Iron Supplements Without Kosher Certification

Question

Hi,

Does an iron dietary supplement for a pregnant woman require kosher certification?

If so, are "Afros" or "Poliron" kosher?

Thank you very much.

Answer

Shalom uVracha,

From what I checked, these products do not have kosher certification, and they are flavored.

The general rule is that a medication swallowed as a pill does not require kosher certification.

However, a medication that is chewed or drunk is considered “food,” and therefore requires kosher supervision.

If there were no kosher alternatives for iron, we would then have to discuss the level of need and possible leniencies.

But since there are kosher options available, one should avoid using flavored products that are not kosher.
