Tevilat Keilim: Coffee Machines
Question
Shalom u Bracha
What is the din (regarding Tevila) about those espresso coffee machines that we have at home ?
And the source for the answer please.
Answer
Shalom!
Thank you for your question.
All appliances that come into direct contact with food must be immersed in a mikva. As such, this appliance needs to be immersed, as well.
It is forbidden to use any utensil or appliance, that requires tevilla, even once before it is toiveled (immersed in a mikva).
If it is impossible to immerse a coffee machine without it breaking, one can have a Jewish professional dismantle the appliance somewhat so that it is no longer functional and then have the professional put it back together. In this way the appliance is considered to have been manufactured by a Jew, and as such, it is exempt from immersion altogether.
