Oven Question

Question

Can one use the same oven for meat and dairy on separate days if the oven isn't turned off in between but the heat is turned down

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

Le'chatchillah one should have two separate ovens.

If that is not possible then one may use an oven for both milk and meat, However, the oven must be kashered when using it for the opposite type. For example, one who bakes an open chicken pan in the oven may not use the oven to bake a pizza. The oven must first be kashered.

To kasher an oven one must wait 24 hours and clean the oven very well. One then turns the oven to the hottest temperature for an hour.

If your oven has a "self-cleaning" cycle then one can run the cycle to kasher the oven.

The oven racks should be kept in the oven for Kashering as well and become kosher along with the oven.

In your case even if the oven is not turned off however one should wait 24 hours from when he last used the oven and then do the Kashering as described above.

This is what one must do every time one wishes to use one's oven for uncovered foods of the opposite type.
