Kashering an Oven

Question

Are electric ovens different than gas ovens when it comes to kashuring?

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

Both are kashered the same way.

One has to wait 24 hours and then an oven can be kashered by heating it at the highest temperature for an hour. If your oven has a "self-cleaning" cycle then one can run the cycle to kasher the oven, or to heat it at its highest for one hour. The oven racks become kosher along with the oven.

This is if the Oven was used for Kosher and one wants to change it over from milk to meat or vice versa, if however the oven was used for non-kosher food then one has to use specifically the self-clean mode to Kasher it if it has one, or if it doesn't then one has to heat it for one hour at the hottest after waiting 24 hours and the all the foods heated in the oven would need to be covered optimally double wrapped. And with regards to the racks, they can be problematic so if it's applicable in order for us to answer accurately please write to us, what they are made out of.
