Why do we need angels?

Question

My son asked last night: "Hashem is so powerful and great. He can even create the whole world with just words. Why does He need angels to do things for him?"

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

G-d does not need angels to do His work. In fact, the teachigns of angels carrying out G-d's tasks are more Midrashic in nature whose purpose is to help us better understadn how G-d works. This is a topic far beyond the scope of his website.

Suffice it to say, G-d is responsible for everything in this world, and His use of messengers (usually metaphorical anyways) is beyond our understanding. Even according to the "angelic teachings" there are many things G-d entrust to no one and does Himself. For example, we are told that G-d personally oversees the needs of the Land of Israel and does not delegate any such needs to angels.
