Why Does G-d Take People Sooner Than Others?

Question

Hello, My mother recently passed away from a unexpected and very rare heart condition. She was 74. Does God single out people to pass away sooner than others? If so, is there any reason? My mother did not have any health problems or heart issues. The doctor who treated my mother to try to save her life said that her heart condition was idiopathic which means that it happened spontaneously and for no reason. And that 50% of the patients that he sees with this condition do make a recovery. But my mother could not. So I was just wondering if God had a predetermined plan for my mother's life to end so soon. If it was part of some divine plan from the beginning when she was born and first entered the world? Thank you.

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for writing.

Our most sincere condolences on your unexpected loss.

Nobody knows why G-d does what He does. Our job is to be good people, observe the Torah, and do good deeds.

Life is fragile and unpredictable. We must use each day to its fullest as we never know what day will be our last. Indeed, to a great extent, life is predetermined.
