Is the saying correct according to Judaism?
Question
Hi rabbi, I'm Jesse Angel and I live in south Africa as a proud Jew. I recently came across a saying that has changed the way I see life. This saying came from a South African by the name of vusi Thembekwayo who won a debating championship. The quote was, " who you are (your talent) is your gift from g-d, who you become( your diligence and achievements) is your gift to god. I really wanted to know if us as Jews and in Judaism we follow this quote. I've tried to relate it to the Torah and I think just like the Torah is the key to a life of success and hashem wants us to forful his Mitzovs with the Neshama he has given us. So my question is, is my correlation with the quote and the Torah true and how can we relate to the saying to forfull Hashems mitzvot! I really appreciate your time rabbi and kindness to guide others with wisdom by answering their questions. Thank you
Answer
Shalom,
The saying is very relevant. Our talents are HaShem's gift. How we use them is what we give back to Him. I would just like to reword it slightly. The original saying was: 'Who you become is your gift to God'. We Jews are well aware that not everything is a voluntary 'gift' to God. There are many things that we 'give' Him because we have to. It doesn't really depend on our wishes.
So I would alter the saying as follows: 'Who you become is your giving to God'.
