When Family Leaves Judaism

Question

Hi Rabbi. I was raised Jewish and I am Jewish. Some of my family members, siblings, converted to Christianity. They pressure me to be Christian, fasting for me, shaming me, etc. my question is, should a person in my situation stop having a relationship with those family members who left Judaism? What about for people who have parents who convert? (Not me, but just curious)

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

If you were born a Jew, you are a very lucky person! You are part of the Chosen Nation that was given the Torah and the mitzvot to perform. You should be proud of your heritage. Any Jew who goes off to another religion has turned his back not only against the Torah but also the entire Jewish people and Jewish history.

Ignore any such pressure and people urging you to change your religion including parents. Connect with your local ortherdox rabbi and synagogue. Continue to study Torah and perform good deeds. You will be much happier in life than anyone else.
