Jewish identity

Question

Have a question Rabbi. My Great-grandfather was Jewish be here married a Gentile and had my grandmother. My mother's mom. She was raised Jewish as a child and had a Batmitzfa ( forever me if I misspelled it) does that make her Jewish and my mother and myself or it just means I have Jewish ancestry. Im Christian but very proud of my Jewish roots.

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

You have clearly shown that you are not Jewish as one's Jewish status is passed down by one's mother.

Since your grandmother was not Jewish, your mother is not Jewish, and hence, you are not Jewish.

It makes no difference if one's father is Jewish, whether one is circumcised, or whether one had a bar/bat mitzvah. Status depends entirely on the maternal line.
