Jewish Status Question

Question

I've been going through a bit of a challenge about my background. I was born to parents whose mother is a Bethel Jew, my father only joined after my mother, when I got to college my parents told me they were converting to Messianic Judaism, 9-10 years ago. I didn't want to discuss it with them because I was independent in my life. But two years ago here I stopped being very orthodox (Haredi) and became Modern Orthodox, am I not still considered a Jew here? Because there's Rabbi in Tanzania told me I'm not Jewish because of my family mistakes . and if I want to return to Hashem I don't need to convert? There is a Beta Israel Rabbi who told me that I am still considered Jewish because I was born to a Jewish mother, but I need to find a Rabbi to make sure I am recognized as a Jewish man and given religious documents.

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

To be honest, your question is not completely clear. There is no term "Bethel Jew," it is not clear what "family mistakes" your rabbi says that your family made, and "Beta Israel" rabbis are not recognized rabbis.

All we can say at this time is that one who is born to a Jewish mother is Jewish forever.

For further assistance please send much clearer details and/or speak to your local orthodox rabbi.
