Identity crisis

Question

Can I be an ethnic Jew and not believe in G d? My family has always told me this. My mum says we are ethnic jews, but none of us believe in G d, we don't go to the synagogue. Is this possible or is my mum confused?

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

Anyone who is born from a Jewish mother is Jewish.

But, as you note, unfortunately there are Jews who are not properly connected with their nation and heritage. I encourage you and your family to explore authentic Judaism. You can do so online at websites such as Aish.com and Torah.org.

I am sure that you will find that a life based on Torah and Jewish values is the most meaningful like a Jew can live.
