Visiting Communities

Question

As a wandering Jew, what are my obligations to the Jewish communities I come into contact with while roaming. I’m moving aboard a sailboat and will be attending Shabbat Services in various Synagogues on the coast.

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

It is unclear what you mean by “obligations to Jewish communities” that you visit on your travels.

A Jew, is a Jew, like any other Jew, wherever in the world he/she visits.

When visiting a community you should attend the local synagogue and introduce yourself to the orthodox rabbi. Ask the rabbi what amenities the city you are visiting has to offer, such as kosher restaurants or an Eruv for Shabbat.

Before Shabbat make sure that your boat is tied to the shore, and keep it like that throughout shabbat so you will be able to leave the boat on Shabbat.
