Question about Jewish Identity and Spiritual Path

Question

Hey, I was adopted by my father’s parents when I was 5 weeks old. My mother was a Jew but I grew up in church of god I saw most of the sermons ok but when I was supposed to be babtised I walked away I was 5. I pray to god I felt a real hard feeling around 11-12 years old to teach about god. But I didn’t, I did me. I ended up going to war and fighting in Iraq. I thought is was something the rivers we faught near were ones in the Christian bible. I had a lot of close calls but while I was there it felt as I had protection I should’ve died several times but nothing touched me . Tell me Rabbi what I need to do I’m not perfect

Answer

Shalom,

You are recognized as Jewish in all aspects. Jewish identity is inherited through the maternal line, and it remains unchanged regardless of a person's actions or choices.

I am pleased to learn that God has kept you in good health and preserved your life.

I would recommend taking time to explore and learn about Judaism, the faith of your people.

Wishing you all the best.
