The connection to the Jewish people
Question
Thank you Rabbi, My name is Timothy Hull and I have an inherited brass temple menorah. It came from my mother when she passed. We are not Jewish. She apparently received it from her mother. It is brass and an antique. It has been used on our grand piano when I was growing up, and sometimes as a centerpiece at special occasions. Rabbi, I would like to know if it is disrespectful for me to keep it. I also would like to see it used by a temple or family if that is best. I would appreciate your input. Thank you, Timothy
Answer
Hello Timothy.
According to what you're telling me, your grandmother's mother is Jewish, so you are also Jewish. According to Jewish law, Judaism is passed through the mother, even if the father is not Jewish. Check with your mother for the details, and if indeed you are Jewish, embrace this precious heritage of your people.
