Halachic Guidance for Possible Jewish Ancestry Without Complete Documentation

Question

I am seeking halachic guidance regarding my Jewish status and the appropriate path forward. I have strong indications of Jewish ancestry (including consistent genetic signals and family traditions), but I currently lack complete documentary proof of an uninterrupted maternal Jewish line. A Beit Din previously advised that while there are indications of Jewish origin, the absence of full documentation prevents formal recognition, and therefore suggested a giyur lechumra (precautionary conversion). However, due to circumstances beyond my control, I have not yet been able to proceed through a local Jewish community. My question is: From a halachic perspective, how should a person in my situation proceed in a correct and sincere way — particularly when there is a genuine desire to return to the Jewish people without material, social, or political motivations?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

The best would be that you try to approach a Beis din or a orthodox Rabbi to direct you how to go forward, like you have been doing.

Wishing you all the best.
