Helping an Intermarried Jew

Question

Someone I know who married a Non Jew reached out to me for financial help. Is there any problem to help such a person? And what should be the approach in dealing with him. Is my being nice to him perhaps deemed a חילול השם being that he married a Goy?? Thank you

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

A Jew who sins is still a Jew. Yes, his act of intermarriage is an abomination and Chilul Hashem but nevertheless our job is to show Ahavas Yisrael – to love of our fellow Jew. Hopefully, one day he will divorce her and properly return to the fold.

As such, there is no reason not to help this person. In fact, your help, which can be used as an opportunity to show him the beauty of a Torah lifestyle and Torah thinking, might actually help him realize the error of his ways.

Good luck!
