Is Marijuana permissible?

Question

Shalom! I am trying to find out if marijuana is permissible to use for Jews? Thank you so much!

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

Marijuana on its own can be dangerous and is illegal in most of the world. As such, from this perspective, the use of marijuana would be forbidden according to Jewish law.

However, there is growing use of it for medical purposes. As such, if one’s doctor recommends it in a place where it is legal, along with a prescription to purchase it legally, then it would permitted to use it.
