Clothing with Hashem's Name

G-d

Question

I bought a big sweater that says “Thank You, Hashem” on it. Am I allowed to wear it in the bathroom?

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

It is forbidden to even think of G-d in the bathroom.

As the Mishnah Berura writes in 85:10, one is not permitted to say the name of G-d in a bathroom or unclean place “even in another language such as Gott in German/Yiddish or Boga in Polish and Russian and the like, the same would be true of “Hashem.”

Nevertheless, since the word “Hashem” is not one of the seven holiest names, and, in fact, is even on a lower level that the word “G-d,” there is no need for your sweater to be covered in the bathroom like there is when bringing tefillin, and the like, into a bathroom.

One a related note, it is forbidden to engrave verses on a ring or other mundane object that will either be thrown away or be taken into a bathroom. The ban applies even when engraving less than an entire verse. As long as the wording is recognizable as a verse then it is forbidden. This is true even if the name of Hashem is not included.
