Did I Violate Shavuot?
Question
I know that we Jews aren't supposed to drive on Shabbos and Yom Tov. Something happened to me on Monday, Shavout that I need help with. I went to shul and since it was Shavout I didn't have my cell or wallet with me. Towards the end of Hallel, I started to feel ill. I felt nauseous and dizzy. When I started to feel really bad, I decided to go home before the end of davening. As I was leaving the Sanctuary area, I started to throw up. A few congregation helped me to find a seat outside and got me water. They asked the maintenance worker to clean up the mess I made. I felt very faint and asked the maintenance worker to call a taxi for me. As soon as the "helpers" heard that, they left me. The maintenance worker and the security guard called a taxi and helped me to the taxi. They also explained to the taxi driver that I was I'll. The driver drove me home and helped me to my home. I then found my purse and paid the driver. I felt and feel very guilty and ashamed. I spoke to my doctor on Wednesday who told me that the dosage of the new medication that I was on had to be lowered as I couldn't tolerate the original prescription. I wanted to discuss this with my rabbi, but he hasn't gotten back to me. Today, is the first day after being I'll that I feel o.k. I hesitate going back to shul and I don't know what to do. I enjoy going to shul. Does Hashem forgive me for my aveira? Also, what do I say to the congregants who may make remarks about taking a taxi on Yom Tov? I don't know what to do. Help!
Answer
Shalom!
Thank you for your question.
While it is difficult to judge a case of illness from your description and whether such “level” of illness justified calling a taxi, and the like, suffice it to say that it is clear from your question that you are a g-d fearing Jew who tried to do the right thing. Right now, that is the only thing that matters. There is no need to fell bad about the past.
You should discuss your medical situation with your orthodox rabbi and doctor to determine what type of reactions warrant calling a taxi (and the like) on Shabbat and which do not.
With blessings,
