Taking Medication on Yom Kippur
Question
I have a bachur who takes Attent (a medication for attention and concentration) every day in a high dosage, and it is part of his daily functioning. He finds it very difficult to swallow without water. What can he do on Yom Kippur?
Is it permitted to take this medication at all on Yom Kippur?
Answer
Shalom uVracha,
Taking medication on Yom Kippur follows the same halachic guidelines as on Shabbos. After reaching bar mitzvah age, only one considered a choleh (ill person) may take it. Before bar mitzvah, it is permitted even in cases of tza’ar (significant discomfort).
In general, the need for medication for attention and concentration is categorized as tza’ar and not as choli, and therefore is permitted only up to bar mitzvah.
If, however, your son's condition is such, that it would classify him as a choleh, it would be permitted to take the medication. In such a case, he should first attempt to take it without water. If it is impossible without water, the water should first be mixed with tea extract, lemon juice etc. this is in order that one should not enjoy it as drink.
