Tisha B'av Fast

Question

I wasn’t fasting on the ninth of Av but then five hours before it ended I started fasting. Does this still count and is it meaningful in any way?

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

The fast is only considered to have been properly fulfilled if one fasts for the entire period of the fast. However, G-d certainly appreciates your change of heart and desire to do the right thing even late in the day on Tisha B'av. So too , it is considered to be joining in with the Jewish community.

In the future, please make extra efforts to fast properly.
