Postpartum Woman After 6 Weeks - Fast of Tisha B'Av

Question

A woman who usually fasts is currently finding it difficult. This Tisha B’Av, she will be six weeks postpartum and is fully nursing. Does she have any kind of leniency not to fast?

Answer

Shalom,

A woman who is more than 30 days postpartum is required to fast, as long as she has recovered from childbirth and has no known medical issue such as iron deficiency, etc.

A nursing woman is also required to fast. She should prepare well in the two days before the fast by drinking plenty of sweetened liquids.

It’s also recommended to drink sweetened liquids after the fast. However, if during the fast the baby lacks milk and needs it, or if she knows from experience that the fast will harm her milk supply, she may drink as needed.
