Pedicure during the Nine Days

Question

Is it permitted for a woman to get a pedicure (nail trimming and polish) on her toes during the Nine Days?

Answer

Shalom UvRacha

There is a dispute regarding the prohibition of cutting nails during the Nine Days.

According to our custom, it is prohibited during the week in which Tisha B’Av falls.

When it is forbidden to trim nails, a pedicure is also not allowed. And when trimming is permitted, a pedicure is permitted as well.

In this year (5785), since Tisha B’Av falls on a Sunday, there is no “week in which Tisha B’Av falls” at all.

Regarding nail trimming, there are differing opinions among the Achronim. However, for the purpose of tevilat mitzvah, it is certainly permitted.

Likewise, in honor of Shabbat — for example, when Tisha B’Av falls on Shabbat — it is permitted to trim the nails on Friday [according to the Achronim].
