Cake with Wine during the Nine Days

Question

Is it permissible to eat during the Nine Days a cake which has a more than 1/60 wine content, even though the taste of the wine is not discernible on its own? And is it permissible to prepare such a cake ab initio, given that we do not nullify a prohibition ab initio?

Answer

Shalom!
If the taste is not discernible, it is permitted. This does not involve nullifying a prohibition, since the wine is not a forbidden substance. The prohibition during the Nine Days is only to derive pleasure from wine, and in your case there is no pleasure.
