Wedding in Elul

Question

Is one allowed to conduct weddings in the month of Elul?

Answer

One is allowed to get married in the month of Elul.

There are some communities where the custom is to intentionally schedule weddings specially in Elul. In fact, there is a certain leniency concerning weddings in Elul, as compared to other months. Remo mentions a custom whereby weddings aren’t held in the second half of each month, because this is a time of the waning of the moon, which is not a good sign. But in Elul, the custom is to allow weddings during the whole month.

Commentators offered several explanations for this. One is to multiply merits in anticipation of the approaching days of judgement. Getting married is a very great mitzvah, and an important merit. Another is that the Zodiac sign of this month is Virgo, which means that by its nature, this month is especially propitious for weddings.

The fact that some Yeshivos don’t allow their students to get married in Elul is due only to their desire not to spoil the atmosphere of serious learning.
