Saying the 27th psalm
Question
When do we begin and when do we finish adding the 27th psalm (“By David, Hashem is my light and my salvation”) to our daily prayers? Thank you
Answer
The time to start adding the 27th psalm after prayer is the second day of Rosh Chodesh Elul (which is the first day of the month of Elul; we don’t say in on the last day of Av), in the maariv prayer.
As for the time to stop adding it, there are several different customs. Some stop saying it after Yom Kippur; others – after Hoshana Rabba; others add it even on Shemini Atzeret. Everyone should conduct himself as dictated by the local custom.
