Prayer and Rosh Hashanah Meal Before Nightfall
Question
Shalom,The halacha is that there is a mitzvah of tosefes Yom Tov (adding to the festival) even on Rosh Hashanah [Magen Avraham 581:10 in the name of the Levush].Based on this, is it permitted to hold a Minyan for Maariv on Erev Rosh Hashanah after Plag HaMinchah in a senior center or medical facility—where candle-lighting time is relatively late for them? And if so, may they begin their Yom Tov meal before sunset?
Answer
Shalom uVracha,
It is permitted to daven Maariv and to eat the Yom Tov meal from Plag HaMinchah onward.
Krias Shema should still be recited after nightfall (tzeis hakochavim).
Lechatchilah, one should eat at least a k’beitzah of bread after nightfall as well.
