Kashering a Toaster Oven for Passover
Question
Answer
Hello
I am copying for you what our teacher, the Gaon, Rabbi Avraham Fried, shlita, wrote on this matter:
Some are lenient and allow kashering an oven for Passover by waiting 24 hours after the last baking, heating it at the highest temperature for an hour, and using different trays. If possible, it is better to heat food in it when covered.
However, many are stringent and believe that a regular oven cannot be kashered for several reasons: [a] To kasher it, a heavy libun of close to 500 degrees is required, and a regular oven reaches at most 300-250 degrees. [b] The oven has a glass door, which according to the Rema, cannot be kashered (see note 2). [c] The oven's rubber parts are considered like plastic, which cannot be kashered by boiling or light libun. [d] The walls of the baking chambers are made of enamel, which is not kashered for Passover (see Shaarei Tzion, siman 451, seif katan 191).
