Reducing the Interior Space of The Sukkah.

Question

Shalom,It says in the Shulchan Aruch, siman 633, halacha 3, that if a sukkah is more than 20 amos high, and a person hangs decorations inside, even though that makes the space smaller, it doesn’t count as reducing the height. The same goes if he puts pillows or cushions there, it’s also not considered a reduction, even if he plans to leave them there. So I have two questions:First: When Maran says “he hangs decorations,” what exactly does that mean? Is it that after putting up kosher s’chach, he then hung decorations from the s’chach, and they hang down, like the decorations we use today that dangle under the s’chach, and that makes the space smaller?Second: About the pillows and cushions, does that mean he put them on the floor of the sukkah, so the sukkah ends up effectively taller, but the inside space is reduced to less than 20 amos? Is that the idea?

Answer

Shalom uVracha,

  1. The poskim disagree whether this applies only when he hung decorations that are not fit for s’chach, so the sukkah still remains higher than 20 amos. (According to this opinion, if he hung grasses or branches that actually reduce the space, the sukkah would be kosher.) Or, even if he hung items that technically could be used as s’chach, it still doesn’t make the sukkah valid, since he hung them for decoration and not for the purpose of s’chach.
  2. Your understanding is correct.
